The Corn Muse
25.5" x 19.5" ©1996
While nine Greek muses presided over the
arts and sciences, this guiding spirit of the Earth Mother traces
her lineage to the Native American tradition. Here, the Cowgirl
as the goddess of the grain is accompanied by her guardian dogs,
as well as the full lunar cycle. On the left is a small vignette
of the Seneca legend of the three sisters or deohako-the squash,
the bean, and the corn-the daughters of the Earth Mother and the
sustainers of life.

Calliope

The Cowgirl here is statuesque, as befits
a goddess of wisdom. The books in her arms remind us that we can
all be our own teachers and reap our own wisdom.

The theme of balance, which often appears in Howell-Sickles
work, takes on new meaning when it is paired with the ideas of harvest
and emergence.
